Manchester United’s financial struggles are set to be eased slightly thanks to some clever negotiating under the INEOS reign at Old Trafford.
Since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge at the club, United have been actively including more clauses into their sale agreements, hoping to benefit off of the long-term development of their unwanted stars.
With a mix of buy-back clauses and hefty sell-on clauses, United are set to benefit from windfall payments from a range of former players as well as immediate transfer fees from outgoing players.
Now, United are set to do just that as Real Madrid have confirmed their signing of Manchester United’s former left-back Alvaro Carreras.

The talented defender joined Benfica permanently in 2024 for £5 million after a successful six-month loan period with the Portuguese side.
As part of his move to Benfica, United included a buy-back clause of £15 million and a sell-on clause of 20%.
Initially Madrid were looking to cash in on United’s buy-back clause, encouraging United to trigger the deal, then selling him on to the LaLiga giants for £30 million, earning The Red Devils £15 million in the process.
However, Madrid have seemingly cut out the middle man, sealing a deal with Benfica, with United still set to benefit from the move.
Madrid have agreed terms with Benfica to sign Xabi Alonso’s favoured left-back option, with the transfer valued at around £43 million (€50 million).
The club announced, “Real Madrid C.F. and Sport Lisboa e Benfica have reached an agreement for the transfer of Álvaro Carreras, who will be under contract with our club for the next six seasons, until 30 June 2031.”
As such, Metro has now reported that United are set to earn £7.6 million (€10 million) as a windfall payment, helping to raise more funds for their squad rebuild.
