Manchester United remain in pole position to sign Matheus Cunha this summer, with confidence growing that he will become the club’s first major arrival under Ruben Amorim.

The latest development was that United’s proposal includes a significant pay rise for Cunha, potentially doubling his current salary.

A move that has helped push the Red Devils push ahead of Arsenal, Liverpool and Newcastle in the race for his signature.

While Arsenal’s sporting director Andrea Berta is a long-time admirer of Cunha, the Gunners are still considering other options for their forward line.

Therefore allowing United to take the lead in discussions.

Ruben Amorim has made Cunha a priority signing, having communicated to the board that the Brazilian is an ideal fit for his system.

Cunha’s versatility across the front line is seen as a major tactical advantage heading into next season.

Although personal terms have not yet been fully agreed, sources close to the situation suggest a verbal agreement is nearing.

With talks progressing ever so smoothly.

Now, transfer expert David Ornstein has provided a fresh update during The Athletic’s latest Q&A session.

“I don’t think it has died down, there’s just not a great deal that can happen until the season ends and his release clause becomes active,” Ornstein explained.

“In the meantime, Man Utd will seek to get personal terms in place.

“They’ve made an offer but I’m not aware of an agreement yet.

“So they’ll continue discussing it in an effort to get there.”

He added: “If/when that happens and the clause becomes active, they can get the deal done.

“Also they’ve got the small matter of a Europa League semi-final – and likely final – to be focusing on.

“Although European football will not impact their ability to sign Cunha.”

The 25-year-old has been in stunning form for Wolves and remains one of the most sought-after attacking talents in the Premier League.

But with the groundwork already laid, United look closer than ever to making him their first statement signing of the Amorim era.
