Numerous players have come and gone at Manchester United over the past decade, with many once tipped for greatness but ultimately unable to fulfil their early promise.

Among them was a young striker who burst onto the scene with a dream debut, only to see his career drift away from the spotlight.

Northampton Town have now confirmed their retained list following the conclusion of their League One campaign.

One name that caught the eye of United fans was James Wilson.

The former United forward is set to become a free agent after the Cobblers opted not to extend his contract following a disappointing season in which they finished 19th.

Just five points clear of relegation.

Wilson first captured attention in May 2014, when at just 18 years old, he scored twice on his Manchester United debut in a 3-1 victory over Hull City.

Managed by Ryan Giggs at the time, United were in transition following the dismissal of David Moyes.

Giggs was quick to praise the teenager.

“You have seen a little glimpse of the future,” Giggs told fans after the game.

“This is what this club is about. We never stand still.

“We give youth a chance as we try and play attractive football.”

Of Wilson, Giggs added: “He is a natural goalscorer but he has got more to his game than that.

“He can run at people, he has got pace and he is a clever player.”

Despite the early promise, Wilson made just 20 senior appearances for United and spent time on loan at clubs including Brighton, Derby, Sheffield United and Aberdeen.

He was officially released by Manchester United in 2019 after joining the club at the age of seven.

Reflecting on his departure, Wilson said: “Massive thank you to everyone at Manchester United. From the players, coaches and staff, that I’ve worked alongside for more than 15 years.

“To the fans who have always been so supportive and believed in me.

“I will be forever in debt to the club for how it has helped me along my journey and the opportunities and achievements it has allowed me to experience.”

After leaving Old Trafford, James Wilson signed permanently with Aberdeen before joining Salford City in January 2020.

He then enjoyed a three-year spell with Port Vale before moving to Northampton Town last summer on a one-year deal.

A deal which included the option for a further season.

That option was not exercised, and the now 29-year-old striker is once again searching for a new club as he prepares to officially become a free agent in June.
