The 3-4-3 system under Ruben Amorim demands a solid, consistent backline – and if Manchester United want to make it work next season, they’ll need more than just two or three reliable defenders.
That’s why the club is preparing for a major squad overhaul this summer.
Multiple incomings and outgoings are expected across the squad.

It is a rebuild that the club cannot afford to mess up.
Especially considering what the fans have had to endure over the years.
One of the names who has long been linked with the Red Devils is Bayer Leverkusen’s title-winning centre-back Jonathan Tah.
The latest was that the hierarchy at United were actively considering whether to sign Tah.
Manchester United talks for Jonathan Tah underway
According to Florian Plettenberg on X, United have now already held talks with Tah’s representatives over a potential free transfer when his contract expires this summer.
The 29-year-old is being closely tracked by several elite European clubs.
Barcelona are still very much keen – though no agreement has been signed yet.
Both Bayern Munich and Real Madrid are also monitoring the situation and would be prepared to act if Barcelona’s pursuit stalls.
United, meanwhile, are eager to strengthen defensively with experience and leadership.

The club believes bringing in a player of Tah’s pedigree, would bolster the back three system under Ruben Amorim significantly.
Especially having just come off a fresh historic Bundesliga triumph with Leverkusen.
Beyond what he offers on the pitch, Tah’s experience and defensive nous would also serve as a valuable guiding influence on the club’s younger defenders.
He would be a huge presence to have around the likes of Leny Yoro and rising prospect Ayden Heaven.
