Leeds United are back in the Premier League after a fantastic season in the Championship under Daniel Farke.

The Peacocks secured promotion with a high-intensity brand of football and a well-drilled squad.

But to avoid following the same path as Southampton, Ipswich Town, and Leicester City, who all dropped straight back down after promotion this season, Leeds know reinforcements will be crucial in the summer transfer window.

They’re now reportedly eyeing Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

A player who has been a long-term target for Manchester United.

Dating all the way back to the days of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager.

Solskjaer was keen on signing the 27-year-old back in the summer of 2019.

However, a deal failed to materialise after United were put off by Newcastle’s £40 million asking price.

Since then, Longstaff’s role at St James’ Park has diminished due to the arrivals of Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

Despite this, it was known last month that the Red Devils had turned their attention back to Longstaff.

However, The i Paper now reports that Leeds United are preparing a move for him instead as they target top-flight experience to help with survival.

Interestingly, there’s said to be some tension at Elland Road regarding the club’s recruitment direction.

While the board appears to favour a more data-driven strategy, Daniel Farke is reportedly pushing for more “battle-hardened” professionals who can immediately contribute.

Sean Longstaff seemingly being a candidate who fits the latter description.

Longstaff is approaching a pivotal moment in his career, now 27 and eager for more regular football.

His game time at Newcastle has dwindled, with no more than 25 minutes played in any Premier League match since December.

Which only goes to show his fringe status under Eddie Howe.

Manchester United, meanwhile, are expected to look elsewhere for midfield recruits, with Atalanta star Ederson as a more likely summer signing.
