Rio Ferdinand makes bold Manchester United claim following Liverpool title win

Liverpool are now the most successful club in English football, but Rio Ferdinand doesn’t exactly see eye-to-eye on the matter.

Liverpool celebrated their 20th league title on Sunday, beating Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs 5-1 at Anfield.

Arne Slot’s Reds have officially moved ahead of Manchester United as the most successful club in English football history.

Liverpool now have six European Cups to United’s three, 69 trophies overall compared to United’s 68.

As well as 52 major honours to United’s 47.

Both clubs have 20 top-flight titles, but United only lead in FA Cups (13 to Liverpool’s eight) and Community Shields (21 to Liverpool’s 16).

A result which saw them climb to 14th in the Premier League table with just four games to go.

And despite Liverpool’s dominant rise, Rio Ferdinand remains adamant Manchester United still hold a unique status in world football.

Rio Ferdinand still names Manchester United as biggest club

Speaking on his YouTube channel, the former Red Devils defender said:

“They’re [Liverpool] the most successful club in the land, but they’re not the biggest club. It’s a fact.

“You go anywhere in the world, there are more Man United fans than there are Liverpool fans.

“But that will change if they remain successful and Man United don’t.

“There will be a swing of new fans who adopt successful teams.

“If Liverpool become that over the next 10 years then they have a chance to balance that up, in terms of the biggest club in the world right now.

“But right now it’s a landslide win for Man United in terms of being the biggest in the world.”

When asked by ex-Liverpool striker Peter Crouch if the current direction of both clubs worried him, Ferdinand admitted:

“It fries my head. I’ve got to be honest, when I was at Man United, we were miles ahead, won leagues, etcetera.

“We clawed it back and then were ahead. I was part of that and it felt great.

“Now I’m just sitting and watching it before my eyes, just all sliding away.

“Liverpool have become more successful in the time since I retired. You’ve just got to accept it.”
