Manchester United’s 4-1 defeat at Newcastle was a night to forget for fans, as the club’s poor Premier League season took yet another painful turn.

Ruben Amorim was visibly frustrated on the touchline throughout the match.

The performance left both the manager and travelling supporters furious.

It even led to the manager lashing out in team meeting which followed post-match.

Adding to the misery on Tyneside was the sight of Joshua Zirkzee limping off in the second half after pulling up with a hamstring injury.

The Dutch striker’s early exit only deepened the sense of frustration on what had already been a dismal day for the club.

Now, the severity of Zirkzee’s injury has been confirmed.

BBC Sport’s Sami Mokbel has reported that the forward is set to miss the rest of the season.

The 23-year-old had been undergoing medical tests since Sunday to assess the damage.

Sources have indicated the injury is bad enough to rule him out of the campaign entirely.

Zirkzee’s absence is a major blow for United, especially with their Europa League hopes hanging in the balance.

The striker scored in the 2-2 first-leg draw against Lyon and was expected to play a key role in the second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday.

Amorim will address the injury when he faces the media on Wednesday ahead of the crucial quarter-final decider.

United still have six Premier League matches left on their schedule.

As well as the potential for more European fixtures if they progress past Lyon and into the final in Bilbao on May 21.

Zirkzee joined United from Bologna last summer and has scored seven goals this season.

However, his debut campaign now looks set to end prematurely.

For Amorim, the injury comes at the worst possible time.

The Portuguese will need to look for solutions to salvage something from a season that continues to spiral.
