Rene Hake is set to return to coaching after leaving Manchester United last year.

The Dutch coach was brought to Old Trafford in July 2024 from Go Ahead Eagles, joining Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff.

However, he departed alongside Ten Hag and has been waiting for a fresh opportunity since.

Now, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Feyenoord are closing in on appointing Hake as assistant manager.

He will work under Robin van Persie, who is expected to be named Feyenoord’s new head coach.

Van Persie is currently managing Heerenveen and will require negotiations to free him from his contract.

Whereas, Hake is a free agent after United paid compensation to Ten Hag’s staff.

Dutch outlet 1908.nl describes the situation as “concrete,” with the belief that both men can be recruited quickly.

Feyenoord initiated contact with the SEG agency – who represent both Van Persie and Hake – to begin the hiring process.

The Rotterdam club, who knocked AC Milan out of the Champions League this week, recently parted ways with Brian Priske.

They are now moving fast to secure their new coaching team.

Hake’s return to Dutch football will mark a fresh chapter in his career after a short and turbulent spell in Manchester.

It will be fascinating to see how well Hake does with van Persie at Feyenoord, given time.

Assistant managers going on to become head coach themselves is not a rare sight in modern football.

Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna are names familiar with United fans.

Both were part of the coaching staff under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with the Red Devils.

Both Carrick and McKenna have since taken on managerial roles.
