Manchester United have had serious concerns in the left-back role for some time now, finally filling the gap with the signing of Patrick Dorgu from Lecce, with Diego Leon joining in the summer from Cerro Porteno.
However, prior to Dorgu’s arrival, Ruben Amorim and previous manager Erik ten Hag were heavily reliant on Diogo Dalot to cover the role with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia side-lined through injury for over a year.
Whilst Malacia was out with a long-term injury, Shaw would return for a couple of games before picking up yet another knock, sending him back for another stay in the treatment room.
As such a reliable replacement for the pair has been needed, however, Dorgu wasn’t their first option for this.
It was widely reported that United were looking to Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies with the Canadian set to come to the end of his contract in the summer.
This means he was eligible to sign a pre-contract with United, much like Leon has done.
Now, The Athletic has confirmed the extend that United went to in a bid to sign the world-class left-back.

Manchester United’s pursuit of Alphonso Davies
The report explains that back in the autumn, United’s director of scouting Steve Brown got in contact with Davies’ representatives to begin sounding out a move.
However, the deal was always going to be harder given that The Red Devils snubbed Davies back in 2017 when scout Jorge Alvial suggested signing the youngster from Vancouver Whitecaps.
Leading up to the January transfer window this year, United were facing opposition from Real Madrid to sign Davies, with Bayern also wanting to retain their star.
However, the left-back is now set to stay at Bayern, with United signing Dorgu in his place.
Whilst Dorgu is a fairly unproven left-back, especially in comparison with Davies, his wage of £40,000 per week reflects this and is significantly lower than any wage that Davies would have wanted.
