Bayern Munich’s Mathys Tel was considered by United, but they refused to panic buy.

A loan was an option, but Tel chose to join Spurs on Monday after rejecting them last week.

Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku was also considered, but the Blues refused a loan deal.

United could not afford a permanent transfer, so that option was quickly ruled out.

With those targets gone, Paul Merson believes United should have gone for Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, he insisted Mateta from Crystal Palace would have been a perfect fit.

“Man United should get Mateta, that’s what they need,” Merson argued.

“He’s strong, leads the line, scoring goals, and works harder than anyone.”

Merson believes United won’t go for him because he plays for Crystal Palace.

“But he’s 100 times better than what Man United have up front,” he added.

“He’s better than [Rasmus] Hojlund and [Joshua] Zirkzee right now.”

Alan Shearer, meanwhile, fears things will get worse at Old Trafford.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football, he said United are “miles away” from competing.

He believes Amorim’s system will take time and results may suffer further.

“Palace deserved their win, and I can see it getting worse before it gets better,” he warned.

For now, United will have to rely on their existing squad until the summer.

Whatever happens, Red Devils’ goalscoring woes will continue to exist.

Their struggles in scoring freely may still occur, even if Amorim gets a top class striker.

The team’s ability to create clear-cut chances at a good rate is important too.

An area that United simply haven’t excelled in throughout the years.

Ultimately, it goes to show that United’s struggles in front of goals go beyond the idea of just having an elite striker.
