Manchester United fans were recently shocked by reports that the club was open to offers for Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.

The Garnacho news was somewhat understandable, given he joined from Atletico Madrid at 16 rather than coming through the academy.

However, the idea of Mainoo being sold caused uproar, with many seeing it as unacceptable under INEOS ownership.

Ruben Amorim has since clarified that Mainoo is a vital part of the squad moving forward.

Ian Wright and Roy Keane have now weighed in on the discussion, offering a different perspective.

The academy players’ potential sales gained attention because any fee counts as pure profit under PSR rules.

Additionally, Mainoo and Garnacho are on modest wages and have high potential, making them attractive to other clubs.

Keane challenged the notion that academy players should be untouchable simply because of their background.

Speaking on the Overlap, Keane said, “Why shouldn’t you sell if you get a good offer? Man City or Liverpool sell academy players all the time.”

Wright pointed out that the manager’s opinion is what truly matters in such decisions.

Wright said, “Is Ruben Amorim happy with Mainoo, playing in that midfield role? It is up to the manager.”

Keane agreed, adding that Mainoo still has to prove himself before earning an untouchable status.

He stated, “Being an academy player shouldn’t have anything to do with that.”

Mainoo’s case is unique because his talent and potential extend far beyond his academy status.

Even without his background, his performances warrant keeping him unless a massive offer comes in.

Amorim has already made it clear he values Mainoo and wants to continue developing him.

The young midfielder has cemented himself as a first-choice option alongside Manuel Ugarte.

This should end speculation about his immediate future as he grows into a key player for United.
