Rio Ferdinand picks out “outstanding” and most improved Manchester United star

A number of players have improved since Ruben Amorim’s arrival, with one currently in the limelight.

Rio Ferdinand knows all about winning big games against Arsenal.

The Manchester United legend heaped praise on a particular player after the FA Cup win.

United beat Arsenal on penalties to progress to the fourth round of the competition.

Altay Bayindir stole the headlines with his heroic saves, but Harry Maguire’s performance was just as crucial.

Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead shortly after the break.

Arsenal equalised following Diogo Dalot’s red card and a deflected strike.

Even with 10 men, United’s defense held firm under intense pressure.

Maguire was at the heart of that resilience, commanding the back three.

Ferdinand, speaking on Rio Ferdinand Presents, singled out Maguire for praise.

“Harry Maguire again, he was outstanding in the centre of that back three,” he said.

“He was dominating in individual duels, he looked composed.”

Ferdinand believes Maguire’s transformation is down to Ruben Amorim’s trust in him, rather than the tactical setup of the back three.

“What he isn’t doing now, it seems, is questioning himself,” Ferdinand added.

Maguire has flourished under Amorim’s management and is full of confidence.

The club even triggered his contract extension, keeping him until 2026.

It’s a remarkable turnaround for a player many thought was on his way out.

Ferdinand emphasised how belief from a manager can make all the difference.

“He’s got a manager who gives him a bit of belief, a bit of confidence,” he said.

“What that does for a player, any player, is unbelievable.”

Maguire has made 18 appearances this season, reclaiming his spot in the team.

His revival reflects the broader change Amorim has brought to United’s squad.

The 3-4-3 system has also played a part in the resurgence of the Englishman.

With two centre-backs either side, Maguire’s job is simplified in having less space to cover in defensive scenarios.

Amorim must work with what he has, as funds are limited in January.

Players like Maguire proving their worth will be key for the team moving forward.
