Manchester United have just suffered a setback with one of their transfer plans this January transfer window.

The Red Devils are having to get creative with the club having no funds allocated for new signings this winter.

This ultimately leaves United with three options.

Firstly, either free agents or lining up free transfers for the summer, a move which has led to links with the likes of Alphonso Davies and  Angel Gomes.

Secondly is to make sales to generate funds for new signings. With United now open to credible offers for any member of their team, even previous untouchables like Leny Yoro, Kobbie Mainoo and Matthijs de Ligt, it’s clear this tact is a real focus to bring money into the club.

However the third is player-swap deals.

Already United have been linked with two different moves of this kind. Joshua Zirkzee’s long-term interest from Juventus is looking to lead to him switching places with Dusan Vlahovic, with Thiago Motta keen to land the Dutch striker.

Then we have Marcus Rashford who United were looking to send to Napoli, and in return receive in-form striker Victor Osimhen.

However, this second deal appears to be now off the table.

Napoli retracts interest in Manchester United wantaway Marcus Rashford

Matteo Moretto has reported that Napoli are not interested in Marcus Rashford, despite previous reports that Antonio Conte was considering the star.

United were hoping to cash in on this interest, despite the obstacle of a £62 million release clause to recall Osimhen from his loan with Galatasaray.

Admittedly the odds were stacked against United on landing the deal, with other top European talent entering the race for Osimhen.

However, this hasn’t affected United’s or Rashford’s desires to part ways.

Rashford’s agent has been in Italy this week, having met with AC Milan and Juventus on top of German side Borussia Dortmund.

Whilst AC Milan are interested in a loan offer, with or without an option to buy, his drastic salary is currently providing an obstacle too big to overcome.

With Rashford currently earning £325,000 per week, over double Milan’s current highest earner, Alvaro Morata on £150,000 per week., Milan won’t be able to agree a deal without United paying the majority of his wages.

The transfer window is still open for another three weeks however, so there is still time for even more twists and turns in the tale of Marcus Rashford’s future.
