Ruben Amorim has received a setback in his bid to strengthen Manchester United’s defence.
Their main top target for the left wing-back position, may not be available this summer as initially hoped.
United’s defensive struggles have been clear under Amorim, particularly with their vulnerability at set pieces.
The left wing-back position has been an ongoing concern.
Luke Shaw, once a regular, has been plagued by injuries, including his infamous leg break in 2015.
Tyrell Malacia, Shaw’s backup, has also had his share of problems.
He recently returned after spending 17 months recovering from a severe knee injury.
During this time, Diogo Dalot has filled in at left-back but is far better suited to his natural role on the right.

United have been scouting potential reinforcements for months.
Alphonso Davies, whose Bayern Munich contract expires in June, has been a priority.
His ability to join on a free transfer was especially appealing.
It was reported at the start of the year that Davies had ‘given priority’ to Munich.
German journalist Christian Falk has now confirmed that Davies will be staying for definite.
Davies is now set to extend his contract with Bayern Munich.
The Canadian international had been expected to leave, but Bayern have been reassured he will stay in the Bundesliga.
While this is disappointing for United, they have other targets.
Benfica’s Alvaro Fernandez is one option.
The 20-year-old left Old Trafford for Portugal last year, but United included a buy-back clause in his deal.
They could re-sign him for just £16 million.
Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is another name on the list.
The 20-year-old has impressed in his debut Premier League season.
A change in representation has sparked rumours of a summer transfer.
Denmark international Patrick Dorgu is also being monitored.
The Lecce defender, just 20 years old, has caught the eye in Serie A.
Finally, there’s Nuno Mendes of PSG.
The 22-year-old worked under Amorim at Sporting CP, making 47 appearances.
PSG are demanding £58 million for Mendes and are pushing to tie him to a new long-term deal.
United’s search for a left-back continues, but options remain plentiful despite the Davies setback.
