Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been banned from driving after speeding.

The 31-year-old England international received the penalty during a 20-minute hearing at Bolton Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

According to Sky News, Maguire was caught speeding on 5 March last year while driving his Range Rover on Wilmslow Road, near Manchester Airport.

Prosecutor Karen Allanson explained that Maguire was driving 35mph over the limit as he exited a tunnel.

Due to the excessive speed, a fixed penalty notice could not be issued.

Maguire, who was not present at the hearing, had already pleaded guilty to the offence in October.

His solicitor, Gwyn Lewis, represented him in court and acknowledged the severity of the incident, stating, “The speed is wholly excessive, and I fully accept that.”

At the time of the offence, Maguire had three points on his licence for a 2021 speeding violation.

Just two days after the March 2023 incident, he was caught speeding again, resulting in another three penalty points.

Mr. Lewis explained that Maguire had been offered a speed awareness course but could not attend due to being abroad over the summer.

He also confirmed that Maguire had already been advised not to drive.

The court heard that Maguire, given his high income, would be able to pay the fine promptly.

Maguire has been banned from driving for 56 days and fined £1,052 after speeding at 85mph in a 50mph zone.

Mr. Lewis emphasised that his absence from court was not meant as a sign of disrespect, adding, “He is a public figure. He is a footballer.”

Maguire’s off-field issues come as he faces challenges on the pitch.

The Red Devils defender missed a late chance to score a winner during the recent 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Despite being out of contract this summer, United confirmed last week they would trigger an option to extend Maguire’s stay for another season.

The Sheffield-born player, who joined United in 2019, served as the club’s captain from 2020 to 2023.
