Manchester United ended 2024 with another disappointing result, falling 2-0 to Newcastle at Old Trafford.
Alexander Isak opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and Joelinton doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 19th minute.
Ruben Amorim’s side struggled to respond, unable to break down a resolute Newcastle team.
The defeat leaves United 14th in the Premier League, just seven points above the relegation zone after 19 matches.
Amorim’s tenure is off to a rocky start, with United now on a four-match losing streak across all competitions.
One of the most notable moments of the evening came when Amorim substituted Joshua Zirkzee in the 33rd minute.
Zirkzee was replaced by Kobbie Mainoo after United’s midfield was overrun early on.
The Dutch forward was met with boos from sections of the crowd as he left the pitch and walked straight down the tunnel.
Zirkzee later returned to the bench for the remainder of the match.

Rio Ferdinand sympathised with Zirkzee’s difficult evening, calling the situation “hard to take” on his YouTube show, Rio Ferdinand Presents.
“I feel for him.
“I’m really, really gutted for him as a former professional footballer,” Ferdinand said.
“To be dragged off after 3o minutes is hard to take… it’s difficult, man”
Ferdinand expressed hope that Zirkzee can recover from the setback with support from his teammates and Amorim.
“This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this happen,” Ferdinand added.
“It’s just about having the resilience to come back as well.”
Zirkzee joined United from Bologna last summer in a £36.5 million deal.
However, he has struggled to make anything of an impact.
The attacker has just four goals in 27 appearances this season.
Amorim acknowledged the challenges Zirkzee faced, describing the situation as a “very difficult moment.”
“He’s a human being, but then he felt the support of the fans in the end, so everything is okay,” Amorim said post-match.
The Portuguese manager will be hoping for a stronger 2025 as United look to climb the table and salvage their season.
