In a seven-goal thriller, Manchester United have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Tottenham.

Spurs emerged victorious with a 4-3 win thanks to several errors from United.

Dominic Solanke put the London-based side in the lead when a poor parry from Altay Bayindir allowed the striker to drive the ball home on a half-volley.

Whilst the two sides spent the remaining half hour of the first half at a stalemate, the second half was much more eventful.

Right off the bat, Dejan Kulusevski capitalised on another United mistake, this time from Lisandro Martinez, as the defender’s feeble clearance allowed for a simple finish for Kulusevski.

Less than ten minutes later Solanke earned his brace thanks to an assist from Djed Spence.

However, Ruben Amorim’s triple substitution, bringing on Amad Diallo, Joshua Zirkzee, and Kobbie Mainoo to replace Antony, Rasmus Hojlund, and Christian Eriksen, saw the Red Devils fight back.

In the 63rd minute, Zirkzee connected with Bruno Fernandes for the striker to grab United’s first goal of the game. This time it was Spurs with the simple mistake, with Fraser Forster’s wayward pass being picked up by Fernandes who squared it to Zirkzee for an easy finish.

Seven minutes later another mistake from Forster saw him hold the ball too long as Diallo charged for him, with the goalkeeper’s clearance hitting the United man and ricocheting into the goal, making it 3-2.

With United looking to get their way back into the game, Spurs’ captain, Son Heung-Min stepped up to take a corner, and thanks to another mistake by Bayindir, Son’s corner kick cleared the goalkeeper ending perfectly in the net.

However, this wasn’t the end of it, with a corner at the other end seeing Jonny Evans grab his first United goal since returning to the club, ending the game 4-3.

With several key mistakes from both teams, it’s no surprise the pundits are calling out certain players, with Gary Neville now getting in on the action.

Gary Neville criticises Lisandro Martinez

Speaking to Sky Sports, Neville left no confusion around his thoughts on Martinez’s poor performance.

While watching Spurs’ second goal back, Neville commented: “[It’s frustrating as] your defender just flicks it with the outside of his boot, it’s a wimpish clearance.”

Speaking about the rest of the game, the former United defender added: “He’s having a nightmare… the start of the second half in particular.”

Arguably, Martinez made some strong contributions, with 87% of his passes completed, he made a tackle, an interception and three clearances, as well as winning four of his seven duels.

However, the mistakes he did make were costly, with United now out of the running for the first piece of silverware on offer this season.
