Ex-Manchester United left back Alvaro Fernandez has addressed rumours that he may leave Benfica to return to his former club.

The Spaniard joined the Portuguese side in January 2024, initially on a loan deal, but permanently signed in the summer after Benfica activated a €6million release clause in his contract.

Since joining, he has quickly become a reliable starter and has attracted interest from some European giants.

Fernandez has started every game since mid-August and it was reported last month that Barcelona and Real Madrid are interested in his talents.

The 21-year-old spent three years of his youth career in Madrid – from 2017 to 2020 – and could be considered a backup option if they miss out on signing Alphonso Davies.

Amid this heavy speculation, Fernandez has commented on a potential move away from Benfica.

‘I have people close to me and they are the ones who look at it more,’ he told Marca.

‘To be honest, I don’t pay much attention to it.

‘I’m focused on what I have to do because I have a game every three days.

‘It’s always nice to have teams call you and everyone wants to grow, but I’m doing very well here.’

Alvaro Fernandez went on to note that United have a buy-back clause in his contract, which is thought to be worth around €16m.

However, he recognises that he has no say in whether this option is activated, and that his sole focus is on succeeding with Benfica and the Spanish national team.

‘United have a signed purchase option, but I’m very happy here,’ he continued.

‘I have a five-year contract with Benfica.

‘I want to win titles and continue to grow personally, as I am still only 21 years old.

‘I want to win, whether it is with Spain or with Benfica, to continue to grow.’
