Ruud van Nistelrooy is currently a free agent after a whirlwind spell at Manchester United.

His second stint with the club started this summer, being drafted into Erik ten Hag’s coaching staff.

Van Nistelrooy was appointed as assistant manager on the back of his successful spell with PSV Eindhoven in 2022/23. Whilst in charge, the Eredivisie side won the KNVB Cup and Johan Cruyff Shield.

Re-joining The Red Devils, the legendary striker supported ten Hag in trying to turn the team’s fortunes around, to no avail.

Tensions appeared to loom between the pair, with an argument seen on the touchline in one of Erik ten Hag’s final matches before being sacked in October.

Upon ten Hag’s departure, van Nistelrooy was put in charge on an interim basis until Ruben Amorim could start in post.

Across the four games at the helm, van Nistelrooy’s United secured three wins and a draw, letting him leave the club as an unbeaten manager.

Ruud van Nistelrooy linked with Championship side

Now, this impressive, albeit short, spell is making clubs take note of the former striker’s abilities, with him being linked to take on a Championship side imminently.

The Sun has reported that recently relegated Burnley are looking to Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager.

Although this isn’t the first time that the Northern side have been linked with the Dutchman. Before arriving at Old Trafford this summer, several teams were looking to hire van Nistelrooy, including Leicester and Burnley.

Whilst it seems unlikely that Burnley owner Alan Pace will sack current manager Scott Parker any time soon, it looks like they have their replacement already lined up.
