This afternoon, Manchester United announced that Erik ten Hag has been sacked.

His departure comes as the club sit 14th in the Premier League and 21st in the Europa League table.

He will be replaced by Ruud van Nistelrooy as interim manager, while the board look for a permanent candidate.

The Dutchman’s exit may come as a surprise, as many questioned how far United’s hierarchy would allow the current situation to spiral.

Although, it is difficult to argue that the decision was unjustified, with the Red Devils enduring their worst start to a Premier League season ever.

Now, it has been revealed by Mike Keegan why United decided to let go of Erik ten Hag.

The call was a difficult one, but unanimously agreed upon among the board members.

They felt that there was no momentum or progress in the current project, citing United’s dreadful start in the league and in Europe.

With the lack of improvement from last season, the hiearachy were running out of excuses to keep Ten Hag.

United finished eighth in the 2023-24 campaign, their worst ever Premier League finish.

Despite leading the club to FA Cup glory, Ten Hag was still in the firing line over the summer.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe took the measured approach and allowed him to continue as manager, despite holding talks with other coaches.

Just last month, CEO Omar Berrada expressed his support for Ten Hag, stating that the board still believe in him.

‘Erik has our full backing and we’ve worked very closely together in this transfer window.

‘We’re going to continue working very closely with him to help him get the best results out of the team.

‘Do we still believe in Erik? Absolutely. We think Erik is the right coach for us and we’re fully backing him,’ Berrada said.

But just eight weeks later, the club have now decided to head in a new direction.

Names like Xavi and Julian Nagelsmann have been tipped to become United’s next manager, as a new era begins at Old Trafford.
