Alvaro Fernandez, once touted as Manchester United’s next big left-back, has been making waves since his departure.

Signed from Real Madrid in September 2020, he quickly impressed in the United academy, but despite his potential, the club decided to sell him for €6 million last summer to Benfica.

Now, as United faces a crisis at left-back with all of their current options sidelined by injury, Fernandez stands out as a prime candidate for a return.

Currently playing at a high level, Fernandez has a WhoScored rating of 7.14 this season.

His ambition to succeed at Manchester United has never been in question.

In December, before signing for Benfica on an initial loan Fernandez said “My main objective is to return to Manchester United and make a place for myself there.”

That dream could now become a reality.

United have the option to trigger a release clause worth £16.7 million, £25 lower than what other top clubs would have to pay.

With interest from the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, and Real Madrid, Fernandez’s stock is rising, but Manchester United still holds a major advantage in securing his return.

Given their urgent need for reinforcements at left-back and the player’s clear desire to succeed at Old Trafford, it seems perfect for United to bring him back and finally give him the chance he was denied the first time around.
