Sir Alex Ferguson has got to be one of the greatest managers of all time, with a truly impressive track record over his 27 years at Old Trafford.

The 82-year-old won an incredible 13 Premier League titles, five FA Cups, four League Cups and two Champions Leagues whilst leading The Red Devils.

Since his departure in 2013, United have gone through five permanent managers including Erik ten Hag, and two caretaker managers, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer having been appointed as caretaker before being permanently appointed.

The likes of David Moyes, Louis van Gall, Jose Mourinho and Ralf Rangnick were unfortunately successful at the head of the club, with Erik ten Hag recently surviving a potential sacking for the second time.

United’s executive committee have decided to stand by ten Hag once more after Sir Jim Ratcliffe extended his contract at the start of the summer. However, the Dutchman needs to start getting results with the club sitting in 14th, only five points above the relegation cut-off.

Several other managers are being linked with the club, with Thomas Tuchel being a routine name brought up as a replacement for ten Hag.

However, now England legend Paul Gascoigne has come out to say that he would love for Sir Alex Ferguson to take up the reigns at United for “one more season”.

Paul Gascoigne’s thoughts on Sir Alex Ferguson returning

Speaking to SportsCasting about ten Hag being retained at United, Gascoigne said: “It’s like me as a player, I knew I was good. And it doesn’t matter who I was up against, or replacing, for instance, no problem.”

He continued: “To follow Alex Ferguson, a few of them, even Jose Mourinho didn’t last long, David Moyes not for long.

“Looking at Ten Hag, I feel sorry for him a bit. I would love Alex Ferguson to take over just for one season and just see what he could do with those players because I think some of them take the p*** out of Ten Hag.

“You’ve got to give the man a bit of respect and it’s such a massive club, I don’t think some of the players realise who they’re playing for.”

Gascoigne’s other suggestion for manager

Whilst the former midfielder would love to see Fergie return to Old Trafford, the other name that came up was ex-England boss Gareth Southgate.

Speaking about Southgate’s suitability for United, Gascoigne said: “If United do get rid of [Erik] ten Hag, I could see Gareth taking over as manager,”

He added: “I always say once you’re England manager, you’ll get a job for life.”

However, last week Southgate confirmed that he want’s to take some time out over the next year to have a break from managing after stepping away from the England role.
