The decision has officially been made, and Manchester United have sacked Erik ten Hag.

This comes after a poor season last year, finishing in eighth overall, and then a disastrous start to this season which has seen them fall to 14th in the League and 21st in the Europa League.

United’s first week back after the international break started well with a 2-1 win over Brentford, however declined from there.

The club’s 1-1 draw to Fenerbahce saw The Red Devils extend their winless run in Europe to six games, with only one win in eleven matches, marking their worst record in 41 years.

The news comes from The Athletic, as Erik ten Hag was informed of the decision to remove him from his role this morning, marking the club’s drastic U-turn from two weeks ago when they stood by him for the second time.

Despite extending his contract in the summer as a vote of confidence to stand by ten Hag, and spending £200 million on players for the Dutchman, the committee have now decided that the Dutchman is no longer the man for the job at Old Trafford.

Recently it’s been reported that Sir Jim Ratcliffe has wanted rid of the 54-year-old, with the INEOS owner having felt that “enough is enough”.

Unfortunately, this decision does come at a cost, with the club needing to pay Erik ten Hag £17.5 million in compensation, which would have only been £10 million if they had parted ways at the start of the summer.

Life for United after Erik ten Hag

It’s understood that Ruud van Nistelrooy has agreed to take over the managerial role on an interim basis while the club look for a more permanent manager.

Unfortunately whoever comes next has an uphill battle after the club’s poor start to the season.

However, even more pressure is on the club with a need for Champions League football next season to avoid significant risks of breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules.

This comes from a clause in their contract with Adidas which will see a penalty of £10 million if the club don’t get Champions League football.

Ultimately this means United needs to achieve a fourth-place finish, which they are currently six points away from.

However, they’re also only five points above the relegation zone at this time, so better results can’t come quickly enough for The Red Devils.

Recent reports have claimed that Omar Berrada has been having in-depth talks with former Barcelona star Xavi Hernandez to take on the role, however, conversations are still ongoing.
