Manchester United are set to face off with FC Twente this evening on 25th September, marking the opening match of their Europa League campaign.
Under the new Europa League structure, instead of a group of four, United will be playing eight different opponents, including FC Twente, Porto, Fenerbahce, PAOK, Bodo/Glimt, Vitoria Plazen, Rangers and FCSB.
Tonight’s match is somewhat of a reunion for Erik ten Hag, with the Dutchman ending his playing career at the Eredivisie side.
Now, ten Hag has come out to announce his squad for the game, which is as follows:
United’s 23-man squad for Europa League match with FC Twente
Goalkeepers: Andre Onana, Tom Heaton, Altay Bayindir.
Defenders: Diogo Dalot, Noussair Mazraoui, Harry Maguire, Matthijs De Ligt, Lisandro Martinez, Jonny Evans, Victor Lindelof.
Midfielders: Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Christian Eriksen, Manuel Ugarte, Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo, Bruno Fernandes.
Attackers: Alejandro Garnacho, Antony, Amad Diallo, Marcus Rashford, Joshua Zirkzee, Rasmus Hojlund.
United’s men return from injury
This selection will bring a lot of hope to United fans, with a number of their recent injury-bound players once more selected for the team.
Victor Lindelof and Rasmus Hojlund are available to make their first appearance this season after sustaining injuries in the pre-season side-lining them for the start of United’s 2024/25 campaign.
Also, Mason Mount is once more back in the side after picking up a knock in United’s 2-1 loss to Brighton.
Erik ten Hag selects prized youngster
Another interesting call-up is youngster Toby Collyer.
Ten Hag is a massive fan of the 20-year-od, with the midfielder looking to be on the same career path as Kobbie Mainoo, breaking into the senior squad this season.
Despite being a potential for United’s Under-21s game against Doncaster on 24th September, Collyer has instead been selected for the senior squad’s Europa League clash. This move to choose the talent youngster for the first-team instead of the youth squad shows his progress this season.
Manchester Evening News has reported that Erik ten Hag rates Collyer and is keen to ensure his development is not hindered throughout the coming season, with his inclusion in the senior team becoming more frequent.
His competitive debut for the club came in United’s Community Shield loss to Manchester City, coming on as a substitute, with Collyer then once more coming off the bench against Liverpool at the start of September.
The 20-year-old’s first full match for The Red Devils came at left-back in the 7-0 win over Barnsley, making it a game to remember.
