Overy was one of United’s first signings this summer, however, due to his age and the regulations around academy signings, his contract had only just been signed.
Speaking on signing for his new club, James Overy said: “Happy to sign for my boyhood club Manchester United. Excited for the future!”
The 17-year-old right-back is joining The Red Devils on a three-year contract.
United beat the likes of Everton and West Ham United to his signature, despite having trials with both clubs. The club must now agree a compensation amount with Perth Glory, with whom the youngster is currently registered according to FIFA rules.
Overy has been in England and playing for Devon-based Newton Abbot Spurs since his family moved from Australia to come to the UK.
However, under FIFA rules, the defender was registered with Australian side Perth Glory, which has held up his signing for United, with a compensation figure needed to be agreed upon.
This is another example of United’s drive towards bolstering their academy with some of the best talent in the country.
With United famously struggling to find a long term right-back since the likes of Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young left the club, it seems that the hierarchy are looking to youth to ensure that there’s a prospective right-back around the club for the future.
